MTN Group are one of the largest mobile telecommunications operators in Africa, with over 230 million customers across 24 countries in Africa and the Middle East. 

Mobile money was not an everyday way to pay for MTN customers

Mobile money airtime top-ups, bill payments and P2P transfers generate revenue for MTN. However they were not gaining everyday usage. 

The commonly used USSD protocol was too time consuming. MTN wanted to establish a way to disrupt the market and make mobile money payments easier.

Contactless payments across Africa 

MTN engaged Youtap to create a secure, contactless point of sale user experience for e-money transactions. Deployed in Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia to date, with many more markets to come.

“Rendu Monnaie” – continuous innovation

West African markets have previously had problems with giving and receiving change. So Youtap provided MTN with the capability to introduce “Rendu Monnaie” otherwise known as “Give Back Change” –customers pay with cash and can receive their change as mobile money. 

Boosting adoption through transport

Online – Offline transactions powered by Youtap’s platforms allowed MTN to introduce a everyday use case across Africa – Transport. Not just limited to formal transport, but also introduced to hundreds of thousands of mass transport such as – taxi vans, shared taxis, and motorbikes
