MTN Group – Africa
Connecting over 230 million people across Africa & the Middle East
MTN is a pure-play emerging markets mobile telecommunications operator at the forefront of technological and digital changes.
From their headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa they are delivering a bold, new digital world to their customers across Africa and the Middle East – one of the world’s fastest growing regions for mobile telecommunications.
MTN Group provides services for over 230 million mobile subscribers in 24 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
MTN’s challenge: mobile money was not an everyday way to pay
Mobile money airtime top-ups, bill payments and P2P transfers undoubtedly all generate revenue for MTN. However, mobile money for MTN was not yet an everyday use case. Most payments with merchants and transport were still made in cash.
The commonly-used USSD protocol used for mobile money is too time-consuming at the point of sale, taking up to a minute to enter the required identifications and authentications.
MTN saw the contactless payments occurring elsewhere in the world as an opportunity for easy mobile money payments, and a way to disrupt the market and take a leadership position.
So here’s what Youtap enabled for MTN:
MTN Côte d’Ivoire launch “MoMo Tap” – contactless mobile money merchant payments by Youtap.

Leading the way across Sub-Saharan Africa
MTN Group engaged Youtap to deliver its contactless point-of-sale user experience for mobile money transactions in Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda. With more countries to come.
“Rendu Monnaie” – continuous innovation
NFC merchant payments for all tiers of the market was just the beginning. West African markets can have big problems giving and receiving change. So Youtap kept MTN in the spotlight by introducing “Rendu Monnaie” or “Give Back Change” – pay with cash and simply tap to receive your change as mobile money.
Mass-market transport – the daily driver
With Youtap’s X8 and online-offline transactions, MTN is now delivering the major everyday use case across Sub-Saharan Africa: Transport. And not just formal transport for the few, but the hundreds of thousands of mass transport options for the many – taxi vans, shared taxis, and motorbikes.
